CONTEST: "MAKE WAVES" PRIZE PACK

First Contest - YAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!

I'm in the middle of reading Bottomfeeder: How to Eat Ethically in a World of Vanishing Seafood by Taras Grescoe and it is fascinating.  A combination of travel writing and scientific research, Grescoe hunts down local seafood delicacies from around the world and traces the fish's journey from the ocean to the dinner table.  In addition to mouth-watering descriptions of exotic dishes, Grescoe has written a condemning expose of the fishing industry and its destructive overfishing.  It really makes you think twice about your favorite seafood dishes.   (And it is such a good book.  Usually science-anything makes my eyes fall out of my head and roll across the floor in order to escape tedious text, but I am completely absorbed in Bottomfeeder.)  I will be reviewing this book in greater depth later, but just can't keep quiet about it.

To celebrate this book and this blog's one-month anniversary, I'm having my first contest.  It'll be a drawing for a "Make Waves!" prize pack, which will contain:

- hardcover copy of
Bottomfeeder: How to Eat Ethically in a World of Vanishing Seafood
- Charity Pot body lotion from Lush Cosmetics; the retail price of this lotion is donated to a variety of charities, including Ocean Conservancy, Clean Ocean Action, and Oceana!
- $25 donation to the charity of your choice!
Depending on the interest and number of entrants, more prize packs will be added in the future!

I'll be collecting entries until July 31st, 2008.  There are a variety of ways to enter:
1. Leave a comment in this entry, make sure to leave a blog link or e-mail address so I have a way to contact you!
2. Go back to my old reviews and comment on them.  Each comment (one per entry) will get you another entry in the drawing.
3. Comment on future reviews as they come out - I update Tuesday, Thursday and at least once on the weekends.
4. Mention this contest in your blog; leave a comment somewhere on

[info]fashion_piranha with a link so I know that you did.
5. Add a link to your blog roll / links page / whatever you call it to Fashionista Piranha!
6. If you're on Livejournal, get another entry by friending  [info]fashion_piranha

That should be enough ways to skew the odds in your favor. :)  Good luck everyone!

Hey there, so glad to hear your thoughts on this fascinating book. It's so important to remember that what we eat comes from somewhere other than the freezer at the market, and to educate ourselves on the choices we make. I'd love to be entered in your contest, and am bookmarking your blog in my favourites!! You can reach me through my own blog (thegirlcancook.blogspot.com)or, of course, through Book Mooch! :)

I love seafood!

I have read some articles previously about the problems with the seafood industry. It seems that all is not what it advertised as and much of the world's seafood resources are being over-exploited. This past weekend there was a story about hundreds of dead penguins washing up on shore. It is speculated that they are having to forage further and further for food and then getting caught in deadly currents that carry them away. Thanks for bring this book to my attention.

They haven't released an audio version yet that I'm aware of, but I shot the publisher an e-mail to see if they have plans to do so in the future. I'll let you know what I find out!

Make Waves Prize Pack Giveaway

Hi there! So have you finished Bottomfeeder yet? At first I didn't think it sounded like a book I would like, but after reading your synopsis of it, now I am intrigued! I normally don't go for books about science either, but if the subject matter is compelling, which this definitely sounds like it is, then I will enjoy it! I like to learn about new topics, and I have a passion for anything that has to do with the water and seafood, so now I am very curious about this book! I hope I have a shot at the giveaway! It is unique, and I love to read, so now that you have my attention, I look forward to what else you have to say about Bottomfeeder!

I should be posting my full-length review this weekend. I did finish it, and I did love it. Two amazing things, because
A/ I usually can't read science books past the first two pages
B/ I love fish, so anything endangering my affection for that food source is not likely to be enjoyed

I actually love what my friend affectionately dubs, "Pop science books". In a way they are too. Books that are written so that they are easy to read and accessible to the general public. I actually keep seeing this in the bookstore and am tempted to get it each time. Glad to hear it's a good one.
