As always, I've got a list a couple of miles long filled with books I would like to read. Some days, I feel like Mr. Henry Beemis, always looking for more time:
But, be that as it may, here are some of the books I hope to read this year, starting with some titles that were published last year:
Out of Oz (The Wicked Years #4) by Gregory Maguire
I believe that Out of Oz is meant to be the conclusion to Maguire's popular Wicked series, and I have been eagerly waiting to find out just how the story's going to end. Although the series definitely had its ups and downs – I'm still rather bitter about A Lion Among Men - but even when I'm irritated with the story, I'm suckered into the books. Plus, the musical based on the first book remains one of my all-time favorites.
The Magician King by Lev Grossman
The sequel to The Magicians - a book I forgot to put on yesterday's list of top books read in 2011 – was published in August, and I still haven't managed to read it. Shameful. The book promises the return and elevation of one of the first book's minor characters to a starring role while Quentin and his friends rule in Fillory. It sounds like so much fun!
IQ84 by Haruki Murakami
As I mentioned yesterday, I've already got a copy of this book and I'm disappointed that I haven't started it yet. Soon, Mr. Murakami. His books are so awesomely batshit crazy that I can't wait to start this, even though I'm still trying to sort out my thoughts on the last book of his that I read, Kafka on the Shore. Now that was a weird story.
There's several new titles to-be-published that I'm looking forward to as well.
Sacre Bleu by Christopher Moore – April 2012
My heart's been a-twitter for this story ever since I heard Moore announce that he was working on a book about the artists of 19th century Paris. In April it will finally be here!!! While I do have an ARC of the book, thanks to a giveaway at one of Christopher Moore's events, I've been waiting to get a little closer to the release date before reading. I'm not sure how much longer I can hold out...
The Queen's Vow by C. W. Gortner – June 2012
It's rare for a man to successfully write historical fiction from a woman's point of view, but Gortner has done so again and again in his books. Ever since his debut The Last Queen, I've enjoyed all his work that I've had the pleasure to read. I'm confident that The Queen's Vow will continue the winning streak.
The Second Empress by Michelle Moran – August 2012
A novel set in the court of Napoleon by one of my favorite authors? Yes please! It won't be out until August, but I'm sure The Second Empress will be worth the wait. Michelle's other books all were!
Another book I eagerly wait for is Neil Gaiman's next novel. I have no idea if he's even working on one at present, but it's been a couple of years since The Graveyard Book and I'm hopeful a new adventure is forthcoming!
So what about you folks? What's the book you definitely want to read this year?
