Today is the fourth annual Take Your Child to a Bookstore Day – a reminder to parents to take the time to introduce their kids to their local bookstores. Created by author Jenny Milchman, the day is meant to be about more than merely selling a few extra picture books. It is hoped that the child will experience all the “extras” a bookstore offers: a community of fellow readers, special author events, and the pure physical pleasure of a space filled with books carefully curated by a bookseller just as interested in the stories as child.
I don’t have kids, but I will be reminding my sister-in-law to take my nephews over to our local children’s book store, Hicklebee’s. I don’t think the day has to be limited to parents, either! If I didn’t have to work, I’d take my nephews myself. But I think it’s also a fantastic opportunity for teachers and others who work with children on a day-to-day basis. So go ahead! Take a little break on Saturday and head out to a bookstore.
