Reading Challenge: The Newbery Medal

Reading Challenge: The Newbery Medal
end date: unspecified
goal: to read as many of the Newbery Medal books as I can get my hands on

Last year I reviewed Neil Gaiman's The Graveyard Book, which in March won the 2009 Newbery Medal.  It made me wonder which Newbery winners and honorees that I read as a child would still be enjoyable reading today, and how other winners had stood the test of time.  (I can't imagine the titles Gay Neck, the Story of a Pigeon or Pigtail of Ah Lee Ben Loo making it onto bookshelves today without a title change.)   Newbery books also have the advantage of being shorter than adult novels, which is great because school is seriously cutting into my reading time.

So here's the list of Newbery Medal recipients I'll be working from.  Bold titles are Medal winners; the titles underneath are that year's nominees.  Titles that are struck out are those I've read but have not reviewed; for many of them it's been well over a decade since I last read the book so if I want to be fair, I'll have to read it again before writing a review.

As I read and review a book, a link will be added here.  Should be fun!  If you've read some of these books, I hope you'll weigh in with your thoughts, too!
